Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE)

  • Also known as "mad cow disease".
  • Is a progressive neurological disorder of cattle that results from infection by an unconventional transmissible agent termed a prion.
  • Evidence indicates that BSE has been transmitted to humans causing a variant form of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
